Oti Mabuse in Specsavers glasses

Strictly glasses – Oti Mabuse interview

TV’s Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse took a break from her dancing schedule to share her love of  glasses with us:

How many pairs of spectacles and sunglasses do you own?

So many. I have loads of glasses, I have different glasses for different occasions. I always make sure there is a spectacle for every spectacle!

Can you describe your favourite pair?

I love this beautiful black pair from Balmain at Specsavers [BL1560S]. They’re very chic, with a thin gold band that run across the top. They’re so elegant, for a night time look they would go with anything.

What frame shapes, colours or styles do you usually go for?

I go for something that I can wear with anything. My glasses need to work whether I’m practising, when I’m in meetings, when I am teaching… I try to pick glasses that frame my face, usually in a neutral colour that goes with all my outfits. Although I have started experimenting with brighter colours and patterns recently. It’s important that I feel good in my glasses.

Who would you pick as your style icon of glasses wearers and why?

Dancer Kimberley Wyatt always look very glamorous in her glasses. There’s something quite Marilyn Monroe, classic Hollywood about her sense of style that I love.

How long have you worn spectacles for, and what prompted you to go for your first sight test?

18 years – I got my first pair when I was 10. I kept bumping into things, so my mum took me to get my eyes tested.

How do you express your personality through glasses, and why is this important to you?

It’s so important to me. My glasses are a part of me, I need to wear them all the time so it’s important that my glasses reflect my personality.

What do your glasses mean to you?

I love wearing my glasses, they are a part of me and part of my identity. When I put my specs on I feel liberated and happy, because I can see and I don’t bump into any tables or walls! I wouldn’t be Oti without my glasses, they are a way of life.

Do you wear contact lenses for dancing, and how would you cope without them?

Yes I do. I don’t think I would cope very well – I really can’t see much without them!

What does it take to become Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year?

All it takes a little confidence. We want to see people of all ages show how much they love their specs by sharing their best selfie. It’s so easy and you could win £10,000 – I say go for it!
